My children love to read, but there are times when I do not have the books on hand nor can I get away from our family business to pick up a book at the local library or bookstore. I have found audiobooks to be especially helpful to our homeschool at moments like that.

Having the ability to search online for an audio version of a book that my children need or want to read has made reading more fun multiple times on our homeschooling journey.

I do not generally allow my children to read new children’s literature. I do not believe that it is beneficial to their imagination, vocabulary or moral well-being. I have found that the newest children’s literature on the market lacks a depth that I believe is necessary for the growth of my children. For that reason and many others, my children will be found reading the classics most of the time.

There are many different times and ways that you can use audiobooks in your homeschool. For our family, there have been times when the size of the book, travel or the need for a change of pace has brought me to look for an audiobook version of the classic we need to read for our homeschool.

I do not mind paying for resources to homeschool my children, but we do not often listen to audiobooks more than once. So, I do my best to find a free classic audiobook site that provides access to the book we need.

I’ve compiled a list of audiobook sites that provide access to free classic audiobooks that you can use in your homeschool. While I do believe that reading aloud to our children and our children reading to themselves is an essential part of their education, there are times when neither one is possible or appropriate. When you find that either one of those statements is true for your family, I encourage you to utilize audiobooks in your homeschool. You just might discover a new love for classic literature in your children or even yourself!
