There are a lot of things that I can teach my children while they are in my home and there are things that I can not teach them. After 5 years of teaching math, I accepted that I wasn’t a mathematician and after having my children and I laugh at my stick drawings I realized that I am in no way an artist. I’m thankful that I was able to find homeschool curricula that could teach these subjects much better than I could.
However, though school subjects like math, english and art are important, if all I focus on teaching my children are things that can be found in a textbook then I will have failed as a parent. The most important things in life aren’t found inside a textbook. I want…no, need to raise children that are kind, honest, ambitious, forgiving, honorable and loving. This requires that I focus more on building my children’s character than I do on the lessons in our textbooks.
So, this year we’ve been focusing on building quality character by using the My Character Matters: An In-Depth Look at Character Traits curriculum. My children are visual learners, so I knew that I needed to put together a list of movies that build character to use with the curriculum in order for them to truly retain what they were learning and apply it to their daily lives. I wanted to dig even deeper into each character trait we were studying, so I decided to create a list of books featuring the characteristic whether it be in a fictional character or in a biography.
I’ve put together a list of over 100 books that build character to use with my children covering a total of 30 character traits, all of which are also covered in the My Character Matters curriculum. While you do not have to use this book list in conjunction with the curriculum, I highly recommend that you do. By doing so you’ll be building your children’s character by spending quality time researching and reading together and talking with them about why their character matters throughout their entire life!
What are your family’s favorite character building books? I’d love to add them to my list!
