The top response to the question I ask my subscribers is typically given in the form of a question. Thus, the title of this blog post.

How Do I Know I’m Doing Enough?
Whether you’re starting to homeschool from the very beginning with littles or you’ve decided to pull your student out of public or private school, you’ve at least asked yourself this question once.
As a veteran homeschool mom and homeschool graduate, I can tell you that this is a question that will follow you throughout your homeschooling journey.
You will wonder what you were thinking about taking your children’s education into your own hands. Others will question your ability to prepare them for the “real world”.
On tough days, both you and your kids will ponder the yellow bus as an alternative. Amazing days will remind you why you started this lifestyle called homeschooling.
Shortly after we moved to northern Maine to start our family business and my little corner on the web was very new, I received a message from a friend.
Our families had gone to church together and they recently had put their children in public school. She told me that on the days I wondered if I was doing enough, to know that without a doubt no matter how little I felt like we were doing, we were doing way more than kids/teachers did in public school.
I have never forgotten that message and while that message did encourage me greatly, as I hope it does you as well, I didn’t need it to know that I was doing enough.
Why?
I already knew that I was doing enough.
How?
- God made me the mother of my children
- I know them better than any teacher could
- That means I know how to reach/teach them best
- He called me to homeschool my children
- Those He calls, He equips
- He had to change my heart because I had no plan to homeschool
- God answered my prayer to allow me to homeschool my children
- He had to change my husband’s mind regarding homeschooling
- He provided for our family financially throughout both of my children’s K-12 years (and still is with 1 in college and 1 in grad school!)
- I didn’t have to do this on my own
- I covered our homeschooling journey in prayer
- God provided everything we needed, when we needed it — curriculum, additional resources, new schedule ideas, finances, etc.
It is so easy to let the negatives we hear, either in our minds or from other people, drown out what we know deep down.
So, the next time you find yourself asking the question, how do I know I’m doing enough, dig down deep and remind yourself of what you know that you know.
From one homeschool mom to another, you are absolutely doing enough. Even on the hard days when you put the books away. Especially on those days. Only a mom would know when that needs to happen.
