Studying nature with your kids is easy to do, much easier than you might think. One of the best things about nature studies is that they are a great frugal homeschooling option!

How to Use a Nature Study Planner

When creating homeschool curriculum, I like to put pen to paper so that if I want to utilize it again in the future, I will have everything neat and organized.

This Nature Study Planner was designed with simplicity and ease, keeping the homeschool mom in mind. There are only two pages inside and they are all you need, so put aside any overwhelming thoughts you may be having already.

The first step is to decide what nature subject you’ll be studying. From leaves to birds, from flora to amphibians, from mushrooms to rocks. There truly is something for everyone when it comes to studying nature.

Next, you’ll need to decide what locations you’ll be visiting to observe this subject of nature. Sometimes a simple walk in the woods will be perfect. Other times, you may have to plan a field trip or two in order to best complete the nature study.

Every nature study requires a toolkit, so take some time to consider which tools you’ll need in your toolkit. Many items you may already have on hand, such as a magnifying glass, an instant camera, a bug collector or a butterfly net. There are some basic, ready-to-go nature kits available that you can start with and add to as you go.

In addition to a toolkit list, you’ll also want to put together your materials list, which features books, articles, videos, printables and any additional resources you want to include in your nature study.

Completing projects as the final part of your nature study is a fun way to allow your kids to share what they loved most. From a photograph album to nature journaling, from a bug collection to an ant farm. Your children could also use their final project to showcase their findings at a homeschool science fair!

The key to creating nature studies for your homeschool is to remember that you’ll need to spend time outdoors with your kids. Nature isn’t something that you can teach well without heading outside, as nature studies truly need to be experience-based.

If you’ve never done, much less created a nature study, don’t be afraid to try something new! Getting started with nature study is easy to do, especially with this printable to help you get started!
