It is important that our children know what Veterans Day is about and the importance of Veterans in our country. Without them, we would not be where we are today as a nation or a people.

We are the land of the free and the home of the brave only because of the men and women who have stepped up to protect us, our freedoms and our country.

If you have a Veteran in your family, thank you for your family’s service to our country. I am deeply grateful for all your family has done for my family and our country.

Whether you personally know a Veteran or not, I encourage you to have your children write at least one thank-you note or letter to a Veteran this year.

Veterans aren’t usually too difficult to find. A lot of them proudly wear hats that state the war they were in, the ship they served on or their military branch of service. You can also often find them by the Veterans license plate on the car they drive, etc.

If your family doesn’t know a Veteran personally, keep your children’s notes/letters in the glovebox of your car and have them keep their eyes open when you’re out and about.

All too often, Veterans are forgotten and your children will bless them most unexpectedly when they hand them their thank-you letter/note.

Be sure to remind them to be respectful and say, “Thank you for your service”, when they’re speaking to Veterans – not just this time, but all the time.

Many VA hospitals have volunteer opportunities where you can also have your kids hand out their thank-you letters/notes. You can check for the closest one to you here.

Another opportunity would be the National Salute to Veteran Patients held yearly for a week in February. This would be a wonderful occasion for your children to learn about history and practice serving others, while most importantly making a difference in the lives of Veterans.

“During the National Salute, VA invites individuals, Veterans groups, military personnel, civic organizations, businesses, schools, local media, celebrities and sports stars to participate in a variety of activities at the VA medical centers.  The activities and events include special ward visits and valentine distributions; photo opportunities; school essay contests; special recreation activities and Veteran recognition programs.”

While I did create these notebooking pages with writing a thank-you letter or note to a Veteran in mind, you can also use these for other writing assignments or studies, such as my U.S. Navy Unit Studies.

This Veterans Day Notebooking Pages pack features pages for PreK-High School, covering all military branches, men and women, as well as a page for each grade level without a graphic.
