I first learned a bit of sign language while visiting a friend when I was 12 years old. At the time, they had a foster daughter that was deaf, so I was able to learn and use what I was learning right away.
While I didn’t continue using sign language consistently, there have been times throughout my life that the little ASL that I remembered was helpful.
Once when I was at work, we had a couple come in that needed help finding something, but no one could figure out what they needed.
I happened to arrive before they left the store and was able to slowly determine how we could help them.
It was at that moment that I realized just how beneficial knowing American Sign Language truly could be.
In addition to instances like that, I know that there are countless ministry and employment opportunities available to those that are fluent in ASL.
I encourage you to consider using American Sign Language as part of your children’s homeschooling journey. You never know what a difference they could make in someone’s life by doing so.
