First Grade Book List

This First Grade Book List is full of books that your kids will enjoy reading. From picture books to early readers, chapter books and classics. There is something for every first grader on this list! 

Teaching your child to read is one of the greatest achievements for a homeschool mom. Hearing them read their first book on their own is a moment you’ll never forget.

Once they start reading on their own, often you’ll have to ask them to read to you again. So, be sure to embrace the times they offer to read a book to you. 

I love classics and always required my children to read classics in addition to the “new” and “fun” books being published. A few of my children’s new favorites included, ‘Mercy Watson‘, ‘Junie B. Jones‘ and ‘The Boxcar Children‘. 

My favorite classics for first graders would have to be ‘Curious George‘, ‘Little Bear‘ and ‘Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel‘. I greatly enjoyed having my children read their new books to me as well, but the classics have always been my favorite. 

Getting your kids excited to jump into the world of reading often means providing them books that actually interest them. As you peruse the book list below, keep your child’s interests in mind to encourage even the pickiest reader to try out a book that mom picked.
