Preparing for the homeschool year is essential to the success of your homeschooling journey. While each homeschool year will have its own unknown, unique struggles and triumphs, being prepared before getting started is both helpful and necessary.

Before beginning a new homeschool year, I completed a 5-step process. I truly believe that each step is imperative to remaining focused and teaching well, all year long.

Preparing for the Homeschool Year: Step One

The first step in my homeschool preparation journey each year is praying. In order to stay on the right path throughout a homeschool journey, you need to bathe the upcoming year in prayer.

It is very easy to get distracted, frustrated and exhausted as a homeschool mom. These truths push me to ensure I’m diligently praying prior to our homeschool year kicking off.

A few of the things I prayed for/about specifically are…

  • Equipping My Heart
  • Align My Priorities
  • Preparing My Children’s Hearts
  • Provision for Curriculum Finances
  • Guidance for Curriculum Selection
  • Direction for Homeschool Schedule

Homeschooling was a journey that the Lord laid on my heart; thus, I knew without a doubt that I needed Him each step along the way. Keeping Him involved from the first step of my homeschool preparation process was both intentional and imperative.

While each step of preparing for a new homeschool year is important, the most essential step is a homeschool mother’s prayer. Your homeschool year preparations may look very different from my own; however, prayer is the first preparation step a homeschool mom should take.

Beginning a new homeschool year with prayer doesn’t mean you stop praying once that has been checked off your list. Continue to talk to God about your homeschooling journey. Take your cares to Him and lay your children at His feet.

I’ve never been very good at journaling in general. However, I’ve found that the best, most consistent way that I spend time communicating with the Lord is through written prayers. Perhaps a prayer journal would be a good fit for you as well?

Not sure if journaling is right for you? I get that! That’s why I created new homeschool year prayer sheets. They’re not something you have to maintain long-term. These were designed specifically to be completed before a new homeschool year.

If you’ve never considered or have a homeschool year preparation process, I hope that my first step is one that you’ll add to your homeschool planning schedule.

It will make a tremendous impact on you, your children and your homeschooling journey. I promise.
