What if I told you that you can cover music in your homeschool on a weekly basis without an instrument and you don’t have to teach the class?
I know how challenging it can be to teach a subject that isn’t your strong suit. I also know how expensive options can be when you’ve reached your capacity in that subject.
While, I love music and am blessed to be able to read, play and sing, math is another story. Thankfully, I didn’t have to teach math beyond my capacity.
In my experience, math, music and science are often the most difficult subjects for homeschool families. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.
Thanks to the growing homeschool movement and the www, there aren’t any subjects that you can’t cover in your homeschool…including music.
We’ve used many different resources and curricula throughout our homeschooling journey. My children also took private music lessons a few times as well.
What I found is that while my children love music as much as I do, they really didn’t have an interest in learning to play an instrument themselves.
As a musician, this required me to shift gears when it came to our homeschool music class. Rather than studying to become musicians themselves, my children thoroughly enjoyed music appreciation style classes.
We utilized unit studies, online courses, YouTube playlists, concerts and more to complete music in our homeschool.
Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box when it comes to fine arts. Not everyone is a musician or an artist, but you never know what hidden interests you and/or your kids might find.

My kids used Hoffmany Academy for several years after we started our family business. My son is in grad school and is starting to miss tinkling the ivories and has gone back and revisited the video lessons from Hoffman Academy.
